A synopsis

First produced in 1972, Absurd Person Singular was touted by the New York Times as the "best comedy Britain has sent us in years." It is a bittersweet farce about the relationships among three couples, in three kitchens, over three successive Christmases. First, the up-and-coming Hopcrofts, anxiously trying to make the evening perfect for their guests- bank manager Ronald Brewster-Wright and his wife, Marion and architect Geoffrey Jackson and his wife, Eva. The next Christmas Geoffrey and neurotic Eva entertain in their messy apartment. Finally, the Brewster-Wrights, in their large Victorian Kitchen. As the years pass, it is evident that the Hopcrofts have become more confident and successful while the others have become less so. The author uses the comedy of the behind-the-scenes part disasters to reveal the rituals people go through to impress one another, addressing issues of human loneliness and alienation..
