Sleeping Beauty
January 2013.  Reviewed by Ann Cox, Leighton Buzzard Observer

The festive entertainment’s programme continues with the panto extravaganza, Sleeping Beauty, at Leighton Buzzard Theatre.

The action actually takes place in the Palace of Leighton Buzzard (bet you didn’t know we had one of those!) where good and evil fight it out as the gorgeous heroine hunts for her handsome prince.

While the story is set in ye olden times – with jokes just as ancient – the story has been brought bang up-to-date.

The Leighton Buzzard Drama Group’s production features a guest appearance by “Susan Boyle” and a group of dodgy looking characters who I later learned, from a four-year-old, were Minions from Despicable Me. There’s even a gag about the town’s police station closure!

LBDG’s youngest members have really taken centre stage this year. Ishana Meadows makes a stunning stage debut as Rose (Sleeping Beauty) while local singing sensation,Hannah Rourke, plays the dashing prince to perfection.

Emma Stone’s Goth-inspired Fairy Nightshade is the sexiest bad fairy I’ve ever seen and she really enjoys whipping up the audience. And a trio of good fairies-Saskia McShane, Charlie Black and Corrina Brodie-are simply magical.

Veteran Dame John Stone is back for his 42nd panto with a rather fruity line in wisecracks so be prepared to join in the silliness for a night of fun.
