Leighton Buzzard Drama Group Membership & Auditions

Currently in production is ‘The Birthday Party’ directed by Ann Kempster.

Leighton Buzzard Theatre 19th - 21st April 2012

This play is often described as a ‘comedy of menace’.

It’s not your ordinary birthday party, the kind with candles and cake. Stanley Webber’s birthday party is downright scary, drunken and filled with menace. The fact that Stanley denies that it is his birthday at all just seems to fuel the party’s incendiary promise. It’s fascinating to watch but you’re glad not to be one of the invited guests.

Stanley Webber, an erstwhile piano player, lives in a rundown boarding house, run by Meg and Petey Boles, in an English seaside town on the south coast.   Two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive supposedly on his birthday and appear to have come looking for him with dangerous intentions towards him.  Stanley is in near panic when he learns that Meg has planned a birthday party for him and that Goldberg and McCann are invited.  They turn Stanley's apparently innocuous birthday party into a nightmare.

The Birthday Party may appear to be straightforward, but like everything else in this mesmerising drama, things are not always as they appear…
